How to pass the Maryland knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Maryland manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Maryland law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Maryland written test format

Test Questions Pass mark Minimum age
Car 25 22 correct (3 mistakes allowed) 15 years 9 months for a learner's instructional permit, 16 years 6 months for a provisional license, 18 years for a license
Motorcycle 25 21 correct (4 mistakes allowed) 15 years 9 months for a learner's instructional permit; a Class M license under 18 requires an approved motorcycle safety course
CDL 50 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) 18 years, because the exception below 18 covers only noncommercial Class B, C and M licenses; 21 years for interstate operation under federal rules

Car. The minimum ages are set by Transportation Article 16-103. The Maryland Driver's Manual DL-002, December 2025 edition, states that the knowledge test has 25 questions and allows 20 minutes. The manual does not publish a passing score, so the figure shown here is flagged as unconfirmed.

Motorcycle. The MVA does not publish the Class M pass mark. Test format references report 25 questions with 21 correct, an 84 percent standard rather than the 88 percent of the car test. The figure is listed as unconfirmed.

CDL. The state age floor comes from Transportation Article 16-103. The 80 percent passing standard for commercial knowledge tests is federal. The 50 question count is the common AAMVA general knowledge format and is flagged as unconfirmed for Maryland.
